Himachal Flood Toll Rises to 109, ₹883cr Damage
Published Jul 17, 2025
The monsoon season has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, causing at least 109 deaths and ₹883 crore in damages. Landslides and flash floods have blocked roads and disrupted essential services. The state government is coordinating relief efforts and seeking Central Government aid to rebuild infrastructure and support affected families, as the region grapples with the aftermath of relentless heavy rains.
Monsoon brings unprecedented devastation to Himachal Pradesh
The monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh has brought unprecedented devastation, with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirming that at least 109 lives have been lost between June 20 and July 16, 2025. This tragic figure includes 64 deaths directly attributed to rain-related incidents and 45 resulting from road accidents, underscoring the profound human cost of this year's monsoon. The extensive damage to infrastructure and property has left the state grappling with immense challenges.
Landslides and floods block transportation routes
According to the SDMA, the relentless heavy rains have triggered numerous landslides and flash floods, blocking 226 roads, including National Highway 707 near Uttari. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported that these blockages are primarily due to the catastrophic impact of landslides and persistent heavy rainfall. The disruption in transportation routes has severely hampered rescue and relief efforts, further complicating the situation for affected communities.
Power and water supply disrupted across districts
The aftermath of the monsoon has also severely impacted essential services. The SEOC report indicates that 52 power distribution transformers and 137 water supply schemes have been disrupted across several districts, including Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Sirmaur. These disruptions have left many residents without electricity and clean water, exacerbating the already dire conditions.
Mandi and Kangra most affected by fatalities
The rain-related fatalities were caused by a combination of landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, electrocution, snake bites, and falls from slopes. The districts of Mandi and Kangra have been particularly hard-hit, each reporting 16 rain-linked deaths. Hamirpur reported 8 deaths, while Kullu and Chamba reported 4 and 3 deaths, respectively. The 45 road accident deaths were highest in Kullu and Solan (7 each), followed by Chamba (6), with others reported from Shimla, Kangra, Kinnaur, and Mandi, indicating the widespread impact of the adverse weather conditions on road safety.
Extensive damage to property and livestock
The SDMA estimates that the total losses have exceeded ₹883 crore, encompassing damage to public utilities, private property, and livestock. The monsoon has claimed the lives of 1,228 cattle and 21,500 poultry birds, adding to the economic burden faced by the state. The state government is diligently monitoring the situation through the SEOC, coordinating with district officials to ensure the effective delivery of relief, restoration efforts, and compensation for affected families. Citizens have been strongly advised to remain vigilant due to ongoing heavy rain warnings.
Central team to assess the damage
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that a central team will soon visit Himachal Pradesh to assess the extensive damage caused by cloudbursts and floods. During a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, CM Sukhu reported that the state has already suffered damages nearing Rs 1,000 crore, despite the monsoon season just beginning. He highlighted that natural disasters have become increasingly frequent since 2023, with cumulative losses surpassing ₹21,000 crore over the past three years. These disasters have had a devastating impact on roads, bridges, buildings, irrigation systems, water supplies, and electricity networks.
State committed to immediate and long-term measures
In light of the escalating crisis, CM Sukhu has urgently requested aid from the Central Government to support relief and rebuilding efforts. The state government is committed to providing immediate assistance to those affected and implementing long-term measures to mitigate the impact of future disasters. The focus remains on restoring critical infrastructure, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, and rebuilding communities stronger and more resilient than before. The people of Himachal Pradesh are demonstrating remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, and with continued support, the state will overcome these challenges and emerge stronger.
