India combats unpredictable weather with new system
India is entering a new phase in its battle against unpredictable monsoons, sudden floods, and scorching heatwaves. On May 26, 2025, the Ministry of Earth Sciences launched the Bharat Forecasting System (BFS), a high-resolution weather model powered by Pune’s “Arka” supercomputer. Running on a 6-kilometre grid—double the detail of earlier 12-km models—BFS promises more precise forecasts for cities, districts, and even individual valleys.
