India has its first above-normal heat spell since July, ending a period of mild summer temperatures.
The early monsoon withdrawal and dry conditions are contributing to the recent temperature increase.
Regional temperature variations show western and peninsular India cooler due to recent rainfall, while northern and northeastern India are warmer.
India experiences sustained above-normal heat after July
India is experiencing its first sustained period of above-normal heat since July, marking a shift from a relatively mild summer in 2025. A rainy monsoon season had previously kept daytime temperatures lower than usual, with heat waves being short-lived and geographically limited. However, in the week ending September 25, the country's average maximum temperature remained above normal for seven consecutive days, a trend not observed since late July. On six of those days, the temperature deviation exceeded 0.2°C, a threshold not crossed since mid-June.
