• The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings for western Sandoval County and northeastern McKinley County in north and west central New Mexico on Saturday, October 24,
• Heavy rainfall on already saturated soil is causing flash flooding in small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and low-lying regions. Doppler radar detected thunderstorms producing up to 2 inches of rain in affected areas, with additional rainfall expected until 6:00 PM MDT. The warnings are in effect until 7:30 PM MDT. Communities across San Juan County and the Navajo Nation are already experiencing significant flooding impacts, including damaged homes and infrastructure. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is planning a federal emergency declaration to address the widespread damage.

Impact & Risks

The flash flooding poses significant risks to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, culverts, and reservoirs. Low-lying areas and poor drainage zones are particularly vulnerable. Residents in affected areas, including Sandoval and McKinley counties, should remain alert to rapidly rising water levels in creeks, streams, and urban areas. The saturated soil increases the likelihood of flash flooding, which can lead to dangerous conditions such as debris flows and road washouts. Communities near burn scars, such as Ruidoso, are at heightened risk due to excessive rainfall.
