US · Published Jul 18, 2026
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning on Saturday afternoon for most of New York City as severe thunderstorms brought torrential rain to the area.
Rainfall rates reached 2 to 3 inches per hour in some locations, overwhelming drainage systems and triggering life-threatening flooding.

Impact & Risks

The flash flooding poses significant risks to urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses, with water levels potentially stalling vehicles and creating life-threatening conditions. Severe thunderstorms accompanying the rain may produce damaging wind gusts of 50 to 70 mph, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Subways and surface transit systems are expected to experience delays citywide. Residents in flood-prone areas are at heightened risk and should prepare for possible evacuations.
