The body of Timothy Allen Smith, a 53-year-old hiker from Wyoming, has been recovered near Crystal Rapids in the Grand Canyon. Smith was the last person missing after flash floods struck the area in late August
The floods, caused by monsoon rains, devastated the Phantom Ranch area and damaged critical infrastructure, including the water pipeline serving the South Rim. Smith was on a hiking trip with two companions, whose bodies were found earlier. Over 80 people were rescued during the flooding.

Impact & Risks

The flash floods have claimed three lives and caused significant damage to the Grand Canyon's infrastructure, including hiking trails and water supply systems. The incident highlights the risks of sudden weather changes during the monsoon season, particularly in areas with burn scars from previous wildfires, which exacerbate flooding. Visitors and residents face challenges due to disrupted water supplies and closed trails.
