Shark Sightings Increase Along East Coast Amid Annual Migration
US · Published Jul 1, 2026
As the summer season progresses, East Coast states are observing an uptick in shark sightings due to the annual June-to-September migration of over 13 shark species.
New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued 'Shark Smart' guidance to beachgoers, emphasizing that these sightings are a natural part of a healthy marine ecosystem.

Impact & Risks

The increased shark activity poses minimal direct risk to humans, as most interactions are unprovoked and result from sharks mistaking humans for prey. However, beachgoers are advised to exercise caution, particularly in areas with seals, schools of fish, or murky waters. States like Maine and New York have implemented safety measures, including flag systems and drone surveillance, to mitigate risks. While Florida historically records the highest number of shark bites, recent data shows a decline in incidents, with only 11 unprovoked bites reported in 2025, below the five-year average.
