• Florida State University researcher Bingqing Liu has highlighted how artificial intelligence (AI) can improve early detection of toxic red tides, which are harmful algal blooms caused by Karenia brevis.
• By integrating satellite data, ocean models, and environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels, AI can identify patterns that precede these blooms.

Impact & Risks

Red tides pose significant health risks, including respiratory irritation and neurological symptoms caused by airborne brevetoxins released when algal cells break apart. These toxins can also accumulate in shellfish, posing a threat to food safety. Vulnerable populations, such as those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, are particularly at risk. The August study revealed that Hurricane Milton's aftermath led to a rapid increase in Karenia brevis nearshore, driven by wind patterns and nutrient-rich freshwater inputs. Early detection through AI could mitigate these impacts by providing timely warnings to affected communities.
