Norway Faces Energy Challenges as Snow Deficit Impacts Hydropower
Global · Published Apr 8, 2026
Norway is experiencing a significant hydropower shortfall due to an unusually dry winter, which has resulted in the lowest snow reserves in two decades.
This deficit is impacting the country's ability to generate electricity, as hydropower relies heavily on snowmelt to replenish reservoirs.

Why It's Important?

This has led to a substantial hydropower shortfall, impacting the nation's ability to generate electricity, which heavily relies on snowmelt to replenish reservoirs. The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate estimates a 25 terawatt-hour energy shortfall, nearly a fifth of Norway's total hydropower output last year.
